Preface

In the ensuing pages, you will be exposed to many of the techniques and technicalities with which skin and scuba diving are involved. At times you will be awed, even frightened by the knowledge and skills to which you are exposed. You may, in this welter of highly specialized information, become inclined to be discouraged and chagrined. However, if you will recollect the final goal toward which all of this material is aimed, to enable you to enjoy the underwater world which has attracted countless thousands before you, you will, I am sure, derive the greatest benefit from your time and concentration.

Just what is this "Goal" toward which you are aiming? What can you expect from the sport of skin and scuba diving? What will you see, feel, or encounter?

These questions, unfortunately, are extremely difficult to answer. Each person finds something a little different, feels things a little more or less strongly than the others. To attempt to describe the underwater world, the sensation of living and becoming a part of the water and the denizens thereof, is virtually impossible. In order for a reader to be able to comprehend a description of something, he must be able to compare it to something in his past experience. However, this will not work when attempting to understand the life of a manfish, for life underwater is like no other experience in the memory of man; it can be compared to nothing else, for it is a totally new human experience.

Some clues can be given to this world, however, by the use of certain "Key" words which embody some of the sensations encountered in this watery world. Such words as "beauty, silence, peace, tranquility, and freedom" capture some of the sensation, and yet, descriptive though they are, mere words still fall far short of conveying the true sensations of life beneath the surface of the water.

Let it suffice to say that you are about to embark upon a totally new realm of human emotions, meaning all things to all men.

I truly envy you your forthcoming adventure in the world of water.
